LibreSSL is a version of the TLS/crypto stack forked from OpenSSL in 2014, with goals of modernizing the codebase, improving security, and applying best practice development processes.

This package is part of the LibreSSL project's implementation of the SSL and TLS cryptographic protocols for secure communication over the Internet.

It contains the general-purpose command line binary /usr/bin/openssl, useful for cryptographic operations such as: debian scripts www creating RSA, DH, and DSA key parameters; debian scripts www creating X.509 certificates, CSRs, and CRLs; debian scripts www calculating message digests; debian scripts www encrypting and decrypting with ciphers; debian scripts www testing SSL/TLS clients and servers; debian scripts www handling S/MIME signed or encrypted mail.
